Juan Garcia Esquivel had two separate periods of stardom. In the '50s, the Mexican-born pianist and arranger became known for his stereo LPs that matched peppy easy-listening orchestral lounge music with the latest tricks of the hi-fi trade. His trademark wide stereo, wild arrangements, ping-ponged voices, and exotic instruments made Esquivel (as he billed himself) a hero to the first generation of audiophiles. In the '80s, writer Byron Werner coined the term "space age bachelor pad music" to describe Esquivel's sound, introducing a new generation of young hipsters to his singular charms.
