Manfred Mann made gleeful ‘60s beat-pop with glossy touches drawn from their love of blues and jazz. There's gospel piano in “Mighty Quinn” and R&B maracas in “Do Wah Diddy Diddy,” while “5-4-3-2-1” is a raw blues stomp made for the pop charts. And while they were among the era's greatest interpreters of Bob Dylan songs (“Just Like a Woman,” “If You Gotta Go, Go Now”) they also drew inspiration from musical theater, in character studies such as “My Name Is Jack” and the biting social satire “Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James.”
