Songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist—Carlos Ares can do it all. The same applies to the styles he tackles, too. There’s an electro-pop tinge to “Velocidad”, all insistent downbeats and cut-up synths. The nods to sub-bass and rap on “Cigarra” and “Terrícola” recall the fractured folk of Bon Iver. And that’s before we get to his collaborations, which cover all sorts of duets that take in swaggering R&B, acoustic ballads and hyper-tuneful pop. The uniting factors: a golden voice and a razor-sharp melodic sensibility.
