Born in Iowa in 1928, Art Farmer's lyrical laidback style and emphasis on sound over speed made him a go-to trumpeter in the '50s. Taking to heart Lester Young's advice to "lighten up" and tell a story in every solo, Farmer gigged and recorded with Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver, and other greats; led trios and quartets; and co-led the Jazztet with saxophonist Benny Golson. He switched to flugelhorn in the early '60s and helped develop the flumpet, a horn hybrid. Farmer moved to Vienna in 1968, from where he toured and record until his death in 1999.
