Recognized as one of England's most soulful voices, Dusty Springfield also had an uncompromising personality that made her a feminist icon. Born Mary O'Brien, she took her stage name when she joined the early-'60s folk group The Springfields. Her first run of success came with soul-infused singles during the British Invasion, but she came to the U.S. to make her most acclaimed album, 1969's Dusty in Memphis. She'd record through the next three decades, with another career revival when she teamed with The Pet Shop Boys on 1990's Reputation. She died of cancer at age 59 in 1999.
