Equally at home gracing the top of the charts as she is in a leading on-screen role, Turkish singer Gülben Ergen is a creative tour de force. After releasing her 1997 debut album Merhaba following a decade in the public eye as an actor, she soon became a fully realised musician in her own right. Ergen captivates with fantezi songs that hit the sweet spot between pop and arabesque with traditional motifs. The results can be at one moment graceful and delicate (“Esasen”), and rousingly energetic the next (“Panda”).
