Miki Matsubara was a Japanese singer and songwriter associated with the 1980s “city pop” movement.
∙ She made her singing debut in 1977, traveling to perform in Tokyo while still attending high school.
∙ Her 1979 debut single, “Mayonaka no Door/Stay with Me,” was an immediate breakthrough, reaching No. 28 on the Oricon chart.
∙ Matsubara sang and composed many songs for anime, including “THE WINNER,” from the 1991 series Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.
∙ Years after her death in 2004, her work was rediscovered by a new generation on social media where it has achieved viral success.
