When I came home from the army

The snow was coming down

You picked me up on Pearl with nobody around

I held you for a moment

And gazed across the street

To some old man in a cafe there

With nobody to meet.

The chair across was empty but I wondered was it full

Did they meet when they were younger

Still just kids in school

Did she go and leave him

Did she die

Were these her last words

As she breathed out her life

Time moved slowly

I had to recommit to putting on the old clothes

That never seemed to fit
