Letra

"Alfred! This way!"
The morning bell had barely rung
When Velvet grabbed her coat and sprung
"Alfred, we have places to be!"
He fixed his tie and followed faithfully
First the hatter on the corner street
Then the cobbler with the dancing feet
The glover, the tailor, the ribbon shop too
Alfred, eight hundred years old, somehow made it through
"My lady, perhaps we rest a while?"
She turned around and flashed a smile
"Nonsense Alfred, we've only just begun!"
And off she went — another shop, another run
Keep up, Alfred, keep up!
The city won't wait, so fill up your cup!
Left turn, right turn, spin around
Best dressed lady in the whole of town!
Keep up, Alfred, keep up!
She's three shops ahead, don't give up!
Tired legs and aching feet
But Alfred never admits defeat!
By afternoon his knees were weak
His pocket watch had sprung a creak
Through twelve boutiques and a fabric fair
Alfred smoothed his silver hair
She darted left, she darted right
A flash of red, gone from his sight
He searched the crowd, he called her name
The street fell quiet, things weren't the same
"I knew that, obviously"
"That was simply... a test run"
Keep up, Alfred, keep up!
But the city was loud and she filled up his cup
Left turn, right turn, she was gone
Alfred stood there, carrying on
Keep up, Alfred... where'd she go?
Eight centuries of service, and this is the blow
Tired legs and a worried heart
How did they end up so far apart?
Eight hundred years of morning tea
Of pressing suits so carefully
Of "Yes my lady" and "Right away"
How did he manage to lose her today?
He straightened up, he fixed his coat
Adjusted the pin at his throat
"I shall find her. I always do"
"You looked for me. I never left"
A small wrapped box tied up in black
"For eight hundred years of never looking back"
He opened it with trembling hands
The finest gloves in all the lands
He looked up slowly, cleared his throat
"...Thank you, my lady"
"Don't mention it, Alfred. Now come along"
"...Where are we going now?"
"One more shop"
"...Of course"
