Paroles

I work long days, still falling behind
Scraping and saving, always striving
Way back when, you bought a house with one year's pay
Today it's five times that
There's just no way
Back then Pell Grants paved the way
Today loans grow faster than we can repay
You drove off the lot at twenty-three
People like me ride a bus, pay a fee
You say I'm careless, not thinking ahead
Not thrifty, not wired, just hanging by thread
But I still try while shifting gears
And you still believe that it's exactly like your yesteryears
I'm not broken, I'm tired
Working to survive, costs climb higher
We're fighting to thrive
I earn four times more but six times less
There's no denying
Investing now's a house of cards, truth defying
It's not that I'm not trying, I'm not lost
But we just can't afford their cost
I still believe, but it remains to be seen
When the American dream has lost its sheen
People like me, with kids like me
Splitting meals, lose homes, just can't break free
Cause Dad, we're still paying for corporate bailouts
Government handouts, still paying for your wars, no doubt
Our children now have to force opportunity
Neighbors relying on shared community
Glass-Steagall died, risk got sold
Now the market burned and our future's cold
Rent takes half, medicine takes more
And government's hand still knocks at our door
You say I should plan, think ahead
Like you once did when wages fed
But I still try while shifting gears
And you still believe it is exactly like your yesteryears
I'm not broken, I'm tired
Working to survive, costs climb higher
We're fighting to thrive
I earn four times more but six times less
There's no denying
Investing now's a house of cards, truth defying
It's not that I'm not trying, I'm not lost
But we just can't afford their cost
I still believe, but it remains to be seen
When the American dream has lost its sheen
This isn't my shame
It's just the math
I'm not laying blame, that's just not your path
And if you listen
Really hear
Stop and see, perspective could be clear
I'm not broken, I'm tired
Working to survive, costs climb higher
We're fighting to thrive
I earn four times more but six times less
There's no denying
Investing now's a house of cards, truth defying
It's not that I'm not trying, I'm not lost
But we just can't afford their cost
I still believe, but it remains to be seen
When the American dream has lost its sheen
