Paroles

I know this ceiling by heart now
Every crack, every water stain, every lie the plaster told
I had a plan written out in a spiral notebook
Bullet points, deadlines, a version of me I'd become
I missed the first one by two weeks, then six, then winter
I told myself I'd start again when the new year comes
My mother asked me what I wanted for my birthday
I said I didn't know — I meant I couldn't say out loud
She bought me something practical, I thanked her nicely
We ate in the kitchen without talking about the cloud
And I think this time I'll make it out
I think this time I finally know what I'm about
But I wake up in the same low ceiling
Same four walls and the same uneasy feeling
Like I ran all night and landed here again
In the exact same room I was trying to leave back then
I got a place with large windows and a view of the tracks
Told everyone I needed space to get back on my feet
I bought good coffee, bought a plant, killed the plant by Thursday
Ordered food online for seven weeks and didn't leave
I met someone who laughed at all my jokes the right way
We lasted ninety days before I got too tired to hide
She said: "I just don't know you, and I'm not sure you do either"
I said: "I know" — I watched the door close from inside
And I think this time I'll make it out
I think this time I finally know what I'm about
But I wake up in the same low ceiling
Same four walls and the same uneasy feeling
Like I ran all night and landed here again
In the exact same room I was trying to leave back then
Maybe the room is me
Maybe I built it somewhere in my sleep
Maybe the door was always unlocked
And I was the one who never tried the handle
I have a better job, I answer emails quickly
I go to bed at eleven, I remember people's names
I look like someone who has quietly figured something out
From the outside, I almost am — inside, it's still the same
Some nights I find the notebook, the one with the bullet points
The handwriting's so young it almost makes me laugh
The plan was mostly right, I just forgot to put myself in it
Some version of me finished it — I split somewhere in half
I know this ceiling by heart now
I repainted it last spring — same colour, different tin
It still looks the same
I don't know what I expected
