The Last Stand

The final 112 had followed the russian river north from Guerneville to Jenner, to the edge of the Pacific Ocean, to the edge of their world. There was no further left to go. This would be the final stand. They’d crossed the river a few miles back and the remaining horses had been swept away and drowned.

The last sighting of the Dead had been at Forestville, but everyone knew that there would be more. And more. The army had been in contact having now created a seal from Mendocino in the north to Sacramento to the foot of the Sierras. They had abandoned their plans to save the remaining 112 as the risk of infection was too great. So, here they were at Jenner, about to die, whilst the seals basked in the nuclear sun.
