It was on November the 5th when Jerome Kern left his home to go
Well, what he called laughingly "antiquing" in one of the old
Furniture stores right in his neighborhood. He stopped at the
Corner light, and he suddenly collapsed. The policeman on duty
Called for an ambulance. Now, Jerome Kern was carrying no
Identification other than his ASCAP card, and he was taken by
Ambulance to the City Hospital
Which was known then as Welfare Island
The authorities, in their search for the patient's identity, called
ASCAP, who in turn contacted Oscar Hammerstein, who was Jerome Kern's
Best friend, and he immediately summoned his own physician. The two
Quickly went to Welfare Island, where they found Jerome
Kern, who had been placed in the charity ward. By that
Time, Kern's fellow patients had learned who their
Distinguished neighbor was, and when Hammerstein and the
Doctor came in, they honored the moment with complete silence
The doctor said that Jerome Kern had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage
Two days later, he was taken to Doctors Hospital, where he was
Placed in an oxygen tent. On Sunday, November the 11th, Oscar
Hammerstein came in to resume his bedside vigil. He lifted the corner
Of the oxygen tent and began to sing Jerome Kern's favorite song
