No One Ever Breaks Up in the Winter

I just thought it was cute The way that she brushed off her seat Before she sat down on the subway And I can think of worse reasons for falling in love And it was cute, and it was sweet, from August through November After that it was easier just staying together I guess that's why no one ever breaks up in the winter It's too cold to sleep alone Did I mention it was Christmas? We went to visit her folks She said "Just do me this one favour It's been so long since I brought somebody home" She grew up in this creepy old house It was creaky and drafty and cool Her Dad had this rule That we had to sleep in separate rooms But she snuck down the stairs And crawled into my bed around midnight It's too cold to sleep alone Her and her Mom got along, they were still pretty close They went for a walk in the morning So her Dad made me coffee And put on ESPN We just stared at the TV While the Jets shitkicked the Steelers But at halftime he sighed And I think he was crying when he said "I used to think no one ever breaks up in the winter And when winters aren't long, kid, you'll always get freed by the spring But the summers won't last like they did in the past The snow starts to fall and you realize you're trapped In a bed in a house full of ghosts and regrets you amassed When you thought It's too cold to sleep alone...
