Businessman's Lament

I don't give anything away if I don't get something in return I don't like to keep anything that I haven't earned Trading value for value that's all I understand And I never do anything unless I have a plan So I guess you could call me a businessman You said you didn't wanna know me, didn't you? I made the world you ordered Then you said it should be free, didn't you? You thought you could get along without me, right or wrong? Someday you'll be looking for me and I'll be gone I'm a businessman, that's what I am I'm a businessman, do you understand Me So many things around you are the products of my skill That should make me happy And yet I'm not fulfilled I just wanted to make this world a better place to be But I need your affection it means a lot to me I guess you could call me a human being But I'll keep right on working and I will survive I'll do whatever I have to do to keep the dream alive So although it hurts I'll go down where the grass grows green Get some Washington connections if you know what I mean But I hope you'll still call me a businessman You called me an enemy of progress, didn't you?
