Sad Bells

Through the early morning whispers comes the sound of falling rain

A persistent sound that's drumming through the deepness of my brain

And the softer gleams of sunshine, will they ever come again?

And the sad bells ring their message all around.

Ghostly shadows loom above me. Through the mist across the street

Comes a peal of ringing church bells, that can't wake me from my sleep

And the mist is much too thick to see the pathway at my feet

As shadows fall on darkened windows

No friendly star to guide the way.

Now the sun rise in the morning turns the earth to shades of red

Like the blood stains on the shirt of the soldier who is dead

And I think of all the tears that his friends will never shed

Though the sun rose in the morning, by the evening it was gone

And the bells will ring again, across the street where they belong

Now the mist is slowly clearing, but you still can hear their song
