Things You Cannot Measure

Everybody’s talking about how much they earn

The number of calories that they burn

Their body fat percentage and every day they’re counting up the steps they take

They’re talking about the size of the national debt

The miles per gallon that their cars can get

All these numbers keep pounding inside my head as I lie awake

But there’s some things that numbers can’t describe

Like how much you make me feel alive

Can’t put a price tag on your treasure

It’s one of those things you cannot measure

The banker can calculate the interest rate

The carnival man, he can guess my weight

My landlord adds up all the rent that I am overdue

They can measure the speed of a pitcher’s fastball

Doctor can measure my cholesterol

But there ain’t no test that can quantify how much I care for you

I’m gonna state my clear position

I sure don’t need no statistician

Some things that numbers can’t express

Like how good you look in that pretty sundress

The way that smile spreads across your face

The way your eyes light up the place

So many ways that you bring me pleasure

These are the things you cannot measure

They can measure the relative humidity

They can measure the rising of the sea

They can count up the number of people that are living in this human race

They can measure the length of my attention span

The data usage in my cell phone plan

But a vision of you is all I carry in my database

My mind is restless but my heart is true

My feet just want to walk next to you

So many ways that you bring me pleasure

These are the things you cannot measure
