The Death of Blind Davy

I felt sorry for Davy

Though I kept it to myself

He did what many a man would do

And it led him to his death

The owner's agents gathered up

Men on false pretence

Kept from them our raw dispute

So they would tend the pits

Davy came from Wales

Could bare see past his nose

When all his kin were driven away

Davy stayed for more

And all the wicked bullying

The blacklegs had to take

Stolen clothes and cheated pay

Still not would Davy break

And then one night on hurrying down

With picks strapped to his back

Too keen to miss the locals

He fell into the gap

The furnaceman descended

The next day early on

Only felt the body

When his shovel hit the bone

And up went Davy's body

Some sympathy was shown

But the furnaceman, he only said

"At least he weren't our own"

It was only that Blind Davy

He's well out of the way

But I can't shed the awful shame

I've felt ever since that day
