I'm Not Me

I stand tall being only me and I am proud to defend my solitary but not lonely legacy.

And I don’t feel like I’m incomplete.

At least not in a bad way, or in that way, waiting for the one I’ll meet.

But now and then someone comes along.

And I admit that I wonder if this is the time that proves that I was wrong.

‘Cause I’m so good at getting lost.

Disappear without a fear of heartbreaking lines I swiftly run across.

Another road that leads to nowhere and I’m always willing to go there.

But you’re not him, ‘cause I’m not me. Least not the me that I should be.

Until I walk my path that’s true I’ll just keep running from you.

I pity my heart when I insist on pushing it to the limits then denying even that it exists.

And on this island that I adore I can’t deny the soothing and battering waves that lap along my shore.

Retreat to lone spots I survive in and just resist the urge to dive in.

And of course I fear I’ve hidden too long and something’s passed me by.

And every year just ridden along makes me even more fearful to try.
