I am an outcast safely hidden in my shell
But I am rotting away
I’m tired of living in this hell
You have been sent to me
As if you were a telegram
I want to let you in
As best as I can
You’ve drawn up your ideal man
In the most perfect diagram
Chiseled chest
The gruffly beard
Dreadlocks
Absolute diaphragm
A shiny car
Prestigious gig
Company-paid vacations
5 star restaurants
And sex on every occasion
But it’s an uphill battle
Just trying to live up to your type
If it walks like a duck
And it talks like a duck....
No matter what I do
I simply can’t cut the mustard
As far as sistas are concerned
You could say I’m done and dusted
So don’t be sore with me
When you see me strolling with Hillary
Now I’m a traitor
A Bryant Gumbel
You jeer at my victory
Yes, it’s an uphill battle
Just trying to live up to your type
Well, I’ve been to the gym
My BMI stayed high
I didn’t do well at the interview
So they promoted another
Maybe he’ll be your godsend
My AC went out
In my hoopty hoop
And the zit on my nose
Won’t go away
But I stand by this:
I did my best to let you in
(And it got my nowhere)
If it walks like a duck
And it talks like a duck....
I am wrecking my brain
Just trying to live up to your type
Fried chicken
Watermelon
And grape Kool-Aid (extra sweet)
Is a part of me
It’s in my DNA
But I was blessed to be
Exposed to other cultures
Though I’ve always returned to mine
Without delay
Still you question
Anything that’s unfamiliar
If it’s out the box
Of the red, black and green
And the creation of the ‘hood
As a conspiracy
Is the same excuse to this day
To which you lean
On
When any one of us makes
The Big Crossover
They’ve sold out
And forgot from whence they came
Yet when we get left out
From a seat at the table
You gripe about that
And to me
That’s rather lame
When I was young you told me
That I talked “white”
I was only speaking the way
The school had taught
It was one of many battles I had
With my own people
It broke my heart
It’s a fight I shouldn’t have fought
My non-black friends
They never judged me
They took me for who I was
Starting from within
But some black folk would size me up
Right from the get-go
If my threads were wrong
Then I definitely wasn’t “in”
So for acceptance
I would learn the latest lingo
And dress the part
To keep up with lastest trend
But I wasn’t being judged
By the content of my character
But rather by what you saw and heard
Thank God, I didn't bend
