Before the label deals and the carefully curated brands

There was a DJ and a microphone and nobody's plans

But their own - just the block and the beat and the crowd

Just the boom bap knocking and the MC loud

Over a break that somebody found in a crate

That's the origin - that's where we locate

Everything that followed - every genre that grew

Every crossover moment - every style that broke through

Traces back to something raw and completely unpolished

Built on nothing but the culture and the craft they established

The DJ was the architect before the rapper arrived

Found the break in the record and kept the party alive

Two turntables and a mixer and the crowd going crazy

Over sixteen bars of something that nobody could name - maybe

Call it frequency - call it the thing that moves the room

Call it the moment when the bass drops and you feel the boom

In your chest - in your feet - in the back of your neck

That's not a genre - that's a physical effect

And the MC stepped up over that locked foundation

Added language to the feeling - gave the culture its narration

Words riding on the groove like they were always meant to be there

That's the origin - two elements - one atmosphere

And then somebody put the guitar in the loop

And the rock kids felt it and they moved to the groove

And the rap kids heard the riff and said that riff is ours now

Two cultures in the same room - nobody taking a bow

Just the mutual recognition of something undeniable

The collision wasn't careful - wasn't even triable

To predict or to manufacture or to market into place

It just happened - in a room - on a stage

And it changed the whole equation - changed what rap could be

Changed the ceiling and the floor and everything between

The originators didn't plan to build a foundation

They just did what felt true - and that became the station

So here we are - same elements - different era

The loop still locked - the boom bap couldn't be clearer

The guitar riff repeating like it did back in the beginning

The MC on the mic - the culture still winning

Because the foundation that they built was strong enough to hold

Everything that came after - everything that's bold

Enough to stand on what they left and build something new

That's not imitation - that's the original coming through

I don't sample the past because I'm stuck in it

I honor it because I know exactly what it did

Built the floor I'm standing on - built the room I'm in

Originators - that's where this all begins

The crate. The break. The mic. The crowd

That's where this started

That's where it still lives
