All out in the alley on a dark and dreary night
Bill Lyons and old Stackalee, they had one awful fight
'Twas all about that John B. Stetson hat
Billy went to the barroom to get him a glass of beer
Old Stackalee come stomping in, he said
"What are you a-doing in here?"
That bad man, they call me Stackalee
Old Stackalee says to Billy, "I'm gonna kill you dead
You've taken all my money and my Stetson right off my head
Yeah, I'm gonna kill you. They call me Stackalee."
Bill Lyons says, "Now, Stackalee, won't you please spare my life?
I got two little children, man, and a darling, loving wife
Don't kill me, don't kill me, Stackalee."
Old Stacky says to Billy, "No, I ain't gonna spare your life
God bless your little children, son, and I'll take care of your wife
I'm that bad man, they call me Stackalee."
Old Stackalee shot poor Billy, shot him right through the head
Only take him one .44 ball to kill poor Billy dead
That bad man, that rascal Stackalee
All out in the alley, I heard my bulldog bark
He's a-barking at old Stackalee went stumbling through the dark
That bad man, he's scared too, that awful Stackalee
When the sheriff found old Stackalee, found him fast asleep
And when he waked old Stack up, he said he jumped about forty feet
He's a bad man, yes, they called old Stackalee
Then Stack says to the jailer, "Mr. Jailer, I can't sleep
Every time I close my eyes, when I Bill Lyons begins to creep
All around this jailhouse all the time."
Men folks all a-laughing, women folks all a-crying
See the folks that come from miles
Around just to see old Stackalee dying
That bad man, yeah, they called him Stackalee
Old Stack standing up on the scaffold and he began to cuss
And the sheriff said, "Let's hang him
Boys, 'fore he kills one of us!"
He's a bad man, they call him Stackalee
Somebody tripped that scaffold and old Stack went down below
And when the devil seen him a-coming
He says, "Well, here's that rascal's soul
We don't need him down here."
Stack grabbed the devil by the collar and he threw him up on the shelf
Said, "Get out of here, you son of a gun, I'll run this place myself
I'm that bad man, they call me Stackalee."
