Squares was literally
The hardest song to finish
It caused the project to stall
For quite some time because
I just didn't feel
That it
Was at the level of the other two songs
And I think I spent like
Maybe 6 months trying to get this one right
And you know
I was listening to a lot of material that had
A similar sound to see if
Doing so would alert me to what was missing
And it didn't really occur to me that
I needed rhythm guitar
Until I listened to Raury's song All We Need
And so you know, after that
Everything kinda started falling into place
And then I randomly stumbled across this guy named Devin Leslie
And you know we had this
Mutual appreciation for each other's work
So I was like bro
I need you on guitar for this song
I sent it over to him
Explained the concept
And, you know, he was down
And at this point
We hadn't even met in real life
So like a month or two out
He hits me up and is like
I'm driving out to LA let's link
This dude drove all the way from Missouri
To play guitar on this song
And, it's crazy to me that
He didn't flake, um... and
He wasn't crazy or anything
You know what I'm saying
And I will just always be appreciative because
There was like a 50-50 chance that
Our encounter could've gone left
And, to be honest, I really believe he's an angel because
He like just...
Fell off the grid shortly after we recorded the song
And I literally do not know where he is
Or where to find him
And there's no trace of him on the internet either
So like...
That shit's wild to me
I thought that would be interesting for you guys to hear
But anyway
In this song, Iris compares her love
For Janine to a box
And, there's you know...
Two sides to the coin here
On one hand, a box can be extremely limiting
But, if you have an imagination
It can literally be anything you want it to be
When I wrote this song
I thought of this Barbie jeep
That I got for Christmas when I was younger
And how big the box it came in was
And my parents allowed me and my sister keep it to play with
And I swear we like spent more time in that box
Than we did in the actual jeep
But, I remember imagining the box
You know... as all these different worlds
When I was inside of it
And, whenever I was jolted out of those worlds
I'd come out realizing that like yo
This is just a plain old box
So for Iris
Being in Janine's presence
Often feels like she's in this fantasy world where
They might actually have a chance together
And you know everything just feels picture perfect
And, Janine's actions in this fantasy world are
So convincing that it causes Iris to completely ignore the truth
When the two of them are apart
Iris experiences a bit of cognitive dissonance because
Janine detaches in a way that causes Iris to question
Everything they experience together
So Iris is always like you know...
Is this even real
Like will it ever be real
So the second verse is essentially a FU to Janine
And Iris is reacting from a deeply wounded place here
And saying anything
And everything to make Janine feel what she's feeling
She's pretty much putting her foot down
And declaring that they're done
Engaging with each other romantically
Like, period
So, here's squares
