Traded bagels and bodegas
For beaches and breezes by the sea
Traded traffic for the tropics
And subway rides for some jet skis
Cabs for cabanas
The Big Apple for bananas
And pizza for a plush paradise
The hustle for a hammock
One window for a panoramic view that made me think I just might
Be happy
Are we happy
An Island just about the size of Manhattan
St Thomas, however is not Manhattan
And I'm not what one would call beach material
I'm German, Irish, pale, freckled
And I have severe PTSD from all the horrible sunburns I had as a kid Oh, and there's no theatre in St Thomas, none
But I don't regret it and I was determined to make it work
Because the best thing that ever happened to me happened in St Thomas
Traded symphonies and spotlights
For strollers and sleepless nights and sunny days
The scripts and the sides
Became storybooks and lullabies
When he took center stage
Curtain calls for diapers
An actress to a wiper
It's a role I never thought I could play
Songs in the sand
Weren't a part of the plan
But I wondered if this could be the way
To be happy
We were happy
He was perfect, and we were giddy with our little Beckett Adam was a great dad, too
He really was
My favorite was watching them frolic in the ocean
While I stayed under the protective shade of a palm tree
Oh, and we lived in this tiny bungalow on the side of a mountain Surrounded by mango and banana trees
And every night Beckett fell asleep to the sounds of the ocean
I never knew how much I'd love the view
Of looking at you and I promise
Through the sun and the rain the beauty and pain
My love will stay the strongest
When you're looking at me I could brave any sea
With the joy that you bring and I'm honest
No matter how high the waves, I'm here to stay
The best thing that ever happened to me happened In St Thomas
It was a magical time It was home
For 2 years
We thought we could run
We thought the sea and the sun could melt his blues away
I thought if he could get warm
Then we could weather the storm that was starting to rage
Mellow to manic
Our peace became panic
Swirling like a giant typhoon
Even in paradise with a kid by our side
We couldn't hide from that monstrous monsoon
Are you happy
He's not happy
Even the tropics couldn't keep Adam's depression at bay
So, at his first mention of perhaps moving back to the states, I was like, I'm in So, we had one final piná colada
Sold everything, and moved back with whatever we could fit our suitcases
To Ohio
Adam wouldn't even consider New York
But I was fine with it
And hey, Ohio's great, my whole giant family's there
And bonus - there are theatres in Ohio
A house and a car
A great job and a yard
Things were falling right into place
Our son starts to grow
And I landed a show
And Adam starts to feel really great
Our son starts to grow
And I landed a show
And Adam starts to feel really great
Our son starts to grow
And I landed a show
And Adam starts to feel really
Shit. He's on edge
