Uncle Harold
Uncle Harold sailed the seas as a young man
Rode the wind from Charlottetown to Amsterdam
He loved to feel the breeze behind his ears
It carried him throughout both hemispheres
When the age of sail was done he left the sea
And he married into my Mom’s family
My aunt Emma was the one he chose
Mom said he was a thorn to her white rose
They couldn't have kids, so they lived alone
Till one day, on a walk on his way home
Harold found a little starling suffering
A bus had given it a broken wing
Let the wind deliver freedom
Feel the breeze behind your ears
Somewhere there’s a sailor singing
Hear the song drift through the years
Harold picked the poor bird up so carefully
And he brought it to their house down by the sea
A splint made of broken popsicle sticks
And he fed the bird on berries, worms and chips
When it recovered and the word got round
Harold became the bird healer in the town
There were many broken fowl left at the door
It became a calling he could not ignore

chorus
My mom and all her siblings were upset
When they went to see their sister they were met
With a storm of feathers, squawks and such a smell
They thought that Emma was living in hell
But Emma loved to see his spirit soar
When a bird that he had healed flew out the door
Something inside her moved and made her smile
Something she knew he’d needed for a while

chorus
When Harold died, we all went to church
The service wasn’t long, the pastor curt
My brother and I were the first to leave
He stopped me, said look up in the tree
There must have been a thousand of them there
So many birds perched in the autumn air
All silent as the casket rolled outside
And was slid into the hearse for the last ride
And as door was shut, it made a thud
The birds rose from the branches up above
And like a cloud of starlings murmuring
They flew as one, I thought I heard them sing
