It was a normal Monday
No sign of what was on its way
Each of us going through our morning routine
Never imagining…how things would change
That first shock
So unexpected we didn't know what to do
The first sign of trouble, I saw people running and so confused
Like a murmuration…it was a hypnotic view
The horror and the terror, I'm sorry that happened to you
As the saying goes what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
But that's easy to say…when you haven't seen your comrades pay
The ultimate price
A dark sacrifice
That day in September will always be remembered
It broke our illusions and showed
how we were vulnerable too
You never think this can happen to you
Those moments that play on a perpetual loop
We lost so many people we never knew
We were forever changed by that day
There are those who think, what if I'd been there too?
Would it have made a difference, going left instead of right
Only to get caught in the crossfire, or escape with my life
We're grateful that we were spared
But then the guilt creeps in, because of all you fared
That day was so surreal
We give thanks to every uniform who appeared
You say it was just your duty, but to those you saved,
Who were lost and in a daze, you were their saving grace
You braved the dark and the unknown
Risked your life to maybe not come home
We are forever in your debt
It was a day we'll never forget
That day in September will always be remembered
It broke our illusions and showed how we were vulnerable too
You never think this can happen to you
Those moments play on a perpetual loop
We lost so many, people we never knew
We were forever changed by that day
We came out stronger with new appreciation
With a tragic badge of our initiation
It's a club nobody wants to belong to
One more on a list of those who do
All we can say is we made it through
And every day we will remember you
Who fell in service to your country
And work to honor your memory
We returned to the scene of the crime
Built an honorable shrine
Give tribute every year
Because we'll never forget that day in September
It broke our illusions and showed how we were vulnerable too
You never think this can happen to you
There are moments that play on a perpetual loop
We lost so many, people we never knew.
We were forever changed…by the events...of that day
