Leon sits all alone in an old wooden rocking chair
His old feet just take him there as soon as the rooster crows
He ponders upon the Wild West and the joys of his younger years
Basking in the country air until the cows come home
He lived mostly alone, but he never seemed lonely
He kept his hands busy with the cows and the ponies
But I sense a brilliance for so modest a man
The townfolk would talk tall tales of his silence
They'd paint him in pictures he never took part in
Building their statues of fiction with idle hands
Leon would go down to church on Easter and Christmas Eve
And all the Baptists would show their teeth
As they stared down the offering plate
Leon had acres of cash, but he gave with his heart in mind
But they all said he was just trying to buy a ticket to the pearly gates
He grew up in the Dust Bowl Depression
His folks taught him to save with a stiff neck resilience
But when he lost his brother, money didn't matter no more
So they judged and they preached for their self-righteous glory
But never once did they ask Leon his story
So never again did he go to the House of the Lord
I asked Leon why he never left town
Even at 95, they're still putting him down
He smiled with his tooth-pickin' grin and these words he used
"I passed by this place everyday on the bus ride
I dreamed and I prayed that one day it would be mine
Now my history's here and one day I'll be history too."
Leon waits all alone in an old wooden rocking chair
And he'll just keep on waiting there until God calls him home
Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home
