A burning claustrophobia
Failures reach the surface
Begging for a sign
There's no one left to call
The whole building knows
They can hear through the walls
And they're listening closely
Storing every detail of it all
I broke when you called
Buried underneath the strain
And I almost froze
When you said you were on your way
Alone in an ill stranger's bed
I don't remember what we said
But you held me close
And told me I needed to stick around
Who else would teach your kids how to play guitar?
You took my arm and led me downstairs
As my vision blurred
I could barely walk
And I felt myself give in
I remember the glow of the streetlights passing by
The low volume radio
I remember your hand in mine
Just keep driving
While I pick up the pieces of my failing memory
Barely able to move
I don't remember where we stopped before we headed home
Stomach burning, fog spreading
Detached from reality
I remember the desperation
Begging anyone who could hear
To put out this burning life
"That bad?" you asked, and held my hand tighter
I didn't want you to let go until we made it home
And at 2am, your house was in my sight
I couldn't focus or even step inside
Your guardian angel finds me
Smiling as you make the trade
She guides me to the spare bed
Swallow half a dose and try to sleep
In a quiet morning restaurant
On the other side of the table
Sit faces I can't quite recognize
But I'm comfortable with them
Making calls and trading looks
As I stumble out to the car
Your guardian angel lets me through
And takes me away to heal
Remembering what the doctor said
Swallowing another dose
"Come back" she said
"You're sliding away again"
Her voice pierced like an arrow
Shattering the dim static
We drove to the park I hadn't seen for years
It looked the same
We watched your and her kids play
And I told her everything
Before we knew it, the sun went down
And I disappeared into silence
While she drove me home
And nothing felt the same
