People, I just want to say, can we all get along
Can we get along
I remember that day back in nineteen ninety-one
Seeing that man lying on the ground
Getting hit with boots and batons
At the time thinking
Damn! — he must have killed someone
Then I learned the truth and my whole world changed
That veil of freedom and justice faded away
Sixteen at the time but watched the news like an old man
Hanging onto every word that was said
Watching the trial like it was a Hollywood movie
Too surreal to be truth — not in the nineties
The blinders came off when the verdict came in
Disbelief and my own anger set in
The riots and fires and protests began
But there's one thing burned in my memory from then
Can we all get along
From the mouth of the man
Who had suffered so much, his anger should be at ten
But in those moments of chaos and rage
He wasn't screaming BURN IT ALL DOWN
LET THEM ALL FEEL YOUR PAIN
Instead, with a tear-filled delivery
Can we all get along
A plea for compassion… a cry for unity
A simple statement with more wisdom than Plato
Yet turned into a meme instead of words to follow
hate and anger only breed more hate
love and kindness are hate's nemesis
I'm not gonna pretend like I know Rodney's pain
I was a sixteen-year-old kid from northern PA
In a little town that was all shades of white
A person of color a rare and unwelcome sight
What are they doing here
But one thing I know that's easy to see
Twenty-five years later and there's no change to be seen
Well… okay… that's not really accurate
There's change alright — we're all going backwards
Can we all get along
From the mouth of the man
Who had suffered so much, his anger should be at ten
But in those moments of chaos and rage
He wasn't screaming BURN IT ALL DOWN
LET THEM ALL FEEL YOUR PAIN
Instead, with a tear-filled delivery
Can we all get along
A plea for compassion… a cry for unity
If anything good came from those days
I started questioning the way I was raised
Started thinking that maybe my elders were wrong
That people aren't so different because of where they were born
Or the color of the skin that they wore
Saw stereotypes as price tags from long ago
Dehumanizing and placing value on skin tone
That color was just nature's design
Not bland and gray
A rose of red, a stone of white
Both uniquely beautiful in their own way
Can we all get along, from the mouth of the man
Who had suffered so much, his anger should be at ten
But in those moments of chaos and rage
He wasn't screaming... burn it all down
Let them all feel your pain
Instead, with a tear-filled delivery he cried
Can we all get along… can we all get along
Can we all let go of the hate… let go of the anger
And finally get along
As far as having peace within myself
The one way I can do that is forgiving the people who have done wrong to me
No one wants to be mad in their own house
I didn't want to be angry my whole life
It takes so much energy out of you to be mean
