As I walked over Gaol Ferry bridge as I often had before
I saw three gallants passing by and I bowed down to the floor
They bid to to me good morning and I answered them the same
They told me they were seeking round for someone who shares my name
Well I did not identify myself for this took me by surprise
I asked why they were seeking him and they gave me no replies
The first of them was dressed in bark and the second dressed in gorse
The third he wore a mossy coat embroidered through with thorns
They cast no shadow where they stood nor reflection in the stream
The sand and silt on the riverbank showed no footprints where they'd been
And they placed the bramble round my neck and a spyglass in my hand
The river rise to bring it's prize with its gifts at your command
Oh mortal man now passing by as a mortal man you be
If you should gaze into the flood then your future you will see
I stood with them a little while and I answered best I could
If you should show these things to me they would never do me good
For if the worst should come to pass then it's best I would not know
While the birds still sing and the church bells ring and the river onward flow
Is not the fox upon the hill and the sparrow on the spen
She sings not for the winter chill, but to bring the summer in
The joy is in the winding wheel like the comfort of a friend
I'd rather live in blinded bliss than know what lies in store
As I walked out from gaol ferry bridge and I looked back from the hill
I saw three gallants passing by and I guess they stand there still
