I drew the maps before I knew the territory
Age seven in a classroom built for someone else
The alphabet came easy, but the faces didn't
I learned to read the room before I read myself
They marked my silence down as something missing
They called my distance something to correct
I watched the patterns running through the ceiling
And followed where the things they didn't expect
I see the ending written in the opening
The consequence already in the cause
I ran the models while they ran the meeting
I knew the outcome three decisions before yours
This mind's a cartographer of everything shifting
Triangulates the weather in a room
I used to call it burden, call it noise, call it drifting
Now I call it early, call it clear, call it true
But they wanted something legible
Something that fit the page
Something that smiled on cue
And didn't know its own age
I bent myself toward readable
For longer than I'll say
And still the wrong name followed me
Into every room I made
I am not the error in the system
I am not the gap between the lines
I was always translating from a language
They never had the patience to find
This is the body I was moving toward
This is the mind I always had
This is the version that stopped apologizing
For the maps nobody else could read
It took the better part of all my thirties
To stop performing fluency I'd built
To let the diagnosis land like weather
Not a verdict, just a name, and not a fault
The mirror took the longest to stop arguing
The pronouns felt like weight I didn't know I'd held
There's a quiet now that wasn't there before it
A frequency I jammed inside myself
The ones who see too early
Pay in ways the calendar won't show
But everything they handed me as damage
Turned out to be something that I know
I am fluent in the fractures
I have walked the edge so long
I can read the room in seconds
And I've never once been wrong about the song
I am not the error in the system
I am not the gap between the lines
I was always translating from a language
They never had the patience to find
This is the body I was moving toward
This is the mind I always had
This is the version that stopped apologizing
The maps were never wrong
I was just reading them alone
Always knew the territory
Always knew the ground
I was never lost
I was just the only one around
