There was a time when I was a king among men
Wealth in abundance and the strength of ten
But nothing lasts forever and soon it was time
For me to learn this lesson, to bear this cross of mine
One day as I was basking in the adoration of the crowd
I heard a voice, it wasn't very loud
It said, "Will you look at me?" So I looked that way
It was an old man and his beard was all gray
He smiled at me, so I smiled right back
But I wasn't really looking and sincerity it lacked
And soon I turned away to more interesting things
Tales of debauchery among queens and kings
So I missed my first chance of redemption from my ways, oh yeah
As time went by, my schemes became bolder
Illusions of grandeur as my heart grew colder
There could never be enough, there could never be an end
But all along the way I lost many a good friend
Then out of the blue he appeared before me
This time he asked me, "Will you listen to me?"
I didn't even smile, I didn't say a word
I turned my back on him, pretending I hadn't heard
So I missed my second chance for salvation of my soul, oh yeah
Eventually my karma started catching up with me
The cracks in the armor were now plain to see
But I couldn't stop it, it had gotten out of hand
At some point I knew this was to be my last stand
Amidst all this turmoil, I saw him once more
Again he asked the question, just like before
He said, "Will you walk with me?" and I shook my head
"Can't you see I'm busy fighting demons?" I said
Yet another precious moment wasted and gone, oh yeah
I ended up sitting in the smoldering ruins
Of an empire once mighty, licking my wounds
As I stared into space, recalling better days
The old man appeared with a merciful gaze
"Will you look at me?" he asked me again
"I will look at you, you're the only one that came"
"Will you listen to me?" he asked tenderly
"I will listen to you, no one else talks to me"
"Will you walk with me?" he wanted to know
"I will walk with you, for I have nowhere to go"
So he stretched out his hand and he said to me
"Let me take you home"
