What good that mounting sky for the grounded such as I?

If feathered how I’d fly

Up from out this dusted plight, from salt and dolomite

Enough now, I need light!

In a dream I carried you over seas deep by canoe

All night I rowed for two

When for a breath I did pause, my fingers turned to claws

Oh how brand new I was!

Out my back wings did sprout, opened up my shout

But what a song came out!

What awoke this new sung song? Noticed how your face was drawn

Oh my dear have I done wrong?

Dipped your fingers, made them drown, looked up then looked back down

Go on now you, go on!

Then from the sky, down from the sky came a great wind, it swept

And who am I, oh who am I not to take this lift if it will let me?

Oh how bold, oh how newly bright I paraded!

How I soared, dipped circled tore through the sky, how I braided

All of a sudden and the night was done, did not recognize the sun

Oh how far have I come?

Come morning, what a flurry you bring! Drew a feather from my very own wing

Oh my eyes have never laid upon such things!

Ravens, jackdaws circled in threes, round my ankles flew a thousand bees

Come, you flighted ones, however you do please!

And when I woke, I awoke with my head laid centered upon your chest

And there I stayed, still I laid till I’d counted a thousand of your breaths

But oh my dear, oh I fear I have awoken some long-slumbering thing

For now that sky, it wets my eyes just to see it over me.

This pallid skin, weathered and thin like a birch tree, might as well grow into the ground

For though my head is heavy my heart is ready and making a low thunderous sound

Because I know I’ve seen it, I didn’t dream it, I saw it, a low gliding gull

Skim the sea, effortlessly, and then arc up with a call!
