Survival of the fittest in these end times
Apocalypse what it feels like
I’m descended from survivors in a kin line
It’s in my blood like a field guide
Disaster, disaster, volcanic catastrophe
Natural cataclysm testing human capacity
Supply chain collapse, every city center crashed
Every Trader Joe’s smashed and empty
Oh, you work in a bank?
Floods broke the riverbank
Give a blank stare now for irrelevant rank
When the National Guard is slow to send in the tanks
Private property, cling to the plank, until it sank
Civilization hangs by a thread and it’s frayed
Take a minute to assess; take a breath and be brave
We came from a line of intelligent apes
Survivors of wars, famines, and plagues
Survival is coded in your brain; it’s highly logical
It’s also coded in your DNA, biological
End Times! Is Revelations diabolical?
Or did we just evolve in a chaotic, entropic mode?
How do things always go? Things fall apart
How you thinkin’ all these hominids got so smart?
Survival is a puzzle that cognition can chart
Like a map to the future drawn all in scars
That’s the calm in the breach
It’s the cognitive niche
When the beast inside us is showin’ all of its teeth
Hell is other people but we’re strong in a clique
Check the techniques to build an apocalypse team
Get "A Field Guide to the Apocalypse" to read
Survival of the fittest in these end times
Apocalypse what it feels like
I’m descended from survivors in a kin line
It’s in my blood like a field guide
I’m naturally selected, by humankind
I’m with my people and we’ll be alright
We got survival in our enzymes
It’s in our blood like a field guide
Like a field guide
It’s the apocalypse, I feel fine
Real nice, I’m keepin’ my people alive
Will you make a contribution?
Look me deep in the eyes
Freeriders on the tribe will be ostracized
Banished off
I probably learned it up in Canada
To be a wise collectivist risk manager
Shelves in my kitchen full of canning jars
Preppin’ with the fresh veggies
And the jam and sauce
An institutionalist
Let’s hope the future is bliss
Let’s hope the hospitals and schools
Continue to exist
But if the future is dystopian, you can enlist
In a community group and get busy pooling your risk
And be happy in the knowledge that it’s human
Risk-pooling, collectivist movements, and inclusion
With protection from the threat of intrusion improving
Survival prospects with need-based infusions
When the smoke on the horizon is very scary
There’s nothing airy-fairy
About the-burden-you-carry sharing
When individualism is Harakiri, it’s very daring
So take a generous helping of Fijian Kerekere
And even if this apocalypse is apocryphal
It’s still fun to make friends and watch a garden grow
Maybe this time is different, we can always hope
I’m just prepping for the probable
So what you got at home?
And what you think is possible?
Survival of the fittest in these end times
Apocalypse what it feels like
I’m descended from survivors in a kin line
It’s in my blood like a field guide
I’m naturally selected by humankind
I’m with my people and we’ll be alright
We got survival in our enzymes
It’s in our blood like a field guide
We got survival in our enzymes
It’s in our blood like a field guide
We got survival in our enzymes
It’s in our blood like a field guide
It’s in our blood like a field guide
In our blood like a field guide
