Coffee went cold again
Truck’s been running ten minutes
Dog’s standing by the door
Looking at me like I’m the one we’re waiting on
Somewhere down the road
An old diesel coughs twice
That’s all it takes
Not the whole day
It never comes back like that
First the radio
Then the dust in my teeth
Somebody’s glove on the floor
A voice asking “You good?”
Before there was time to answer
I remember everything
Not when I want to
Not in order
But I remember everything
Cold nose against my hand
He’s been doing that lately
When I stand somewhere too long
I look down
He looks up
Coffee’s still there
Engine’s gone
Kitchen clock says 6:14
I don’t know how long I was gone
Funny what stays
Not the things you’d think
I remember Miller hated instant coffee
I remember somebody always lost a pen
I remember three dirty cards
Taped above a bunk
I remember laughing
Five minutes before nobody was laughing
I remember the exact sound
Of somebody saying my name
I don’t remember what I said back
I remember everything
The useless things
The small things
Things nobody would put
In a report
Not when I want to
Not in order
I remember everything
Miller couldn’t sing
Didn’t stop him once
Same damn song every morning
Half the words wrong
Boots still unlaced
Coffee in his hand
We used to tell him
If the enemy ever heard it
The war would end by lunch
He laughed harder than anybody
That’s what comes back
Not medals
Not speeches
Not the things they print later
His stupid song
That chipped green mug
The way he’d say
“Give me five”
And somehow mean twenty
People ask what I remember
I never know what to tell them
Because I remember him alive
Then sometimes
The next piece comes with it
The radio getting louder
Somebody calling twice
Dust hanging where the road used to be
And Miller’s mug
Still sitting where he left it
I remember everything
That’s the problem
That’s the gift
I remember everything
Someone asked me once
“If you could forget it
Would you?”
Some of it
Yeah
Without thinking twice
But not Miller
Not that awful singing
Not the green mug
Not twenty minutes
When he swore it would be five
Not the way we laughed
At things that weren’t even funny
Because there wasn’t much else to do
You take away the worst day
I don’t know what else goes with it
And I’m not willing
To lose him twice
So I stopped trying
To make my head forget
Some mornings
The memories come hard
Some mornings
They’re just memories
And every once in a while
An old diesel starts down the road
And I keep drinking my coffee
I remember everything
Not when I want to
Not in order
The bad
The stupid
The good
Miller singing every word wrong
I remember everything
And I’m still here
To remember it
Miller still can't sing
