First saw the Devil outside Cheyenne
Black horse carrying a black-clad man.
No tracks behind him, red eyes bright,
Been chasing me ever since that night.
I ran through Dodge, rode Yuma way,
Never slept where I stopped to stay.
Trusted no man, watched every door,
Till I couldn't live that way anymore.
Drew my Colt beneath a blood-red sky,
Put six through his chest—he didn't die.
Reloaded fast and fired again,
He took twelve rounds and wore that grin.
That's when I drew my line in the sand:
I'm done running from you, damned man.
I killed the devil!
Or I swear I tried!
Put twelve through his chest—
He wouldn't fucking die!
From Cheyenne to Dodge,
He was right on my trail!
I couldn't outrun him!
Couldn't send him to hell!
I quit running!
Drew my line in the dust!
If the devil wants my soul—
He's coming through me first!
Yuma at midnight,
Tombstone at dawn.
Every time I dropped him,
The bastard came on.
Shot him in Deadwood,
Cut him in Tuscon.
Burned him in a barn—
By morning he was gone.
Then outside Providence
I heard church bells ring.
Crosses on the doors,
Folks praying within.
Walked to the preacher,
Said, "I've tried every way."
He filled up a flask:
"Then try faith today."
Devil rode in
When the daylight died.
I walked to the street
With the Lord on my side.
He came like thunder.
I drew like fire.
Six more rounds—
The bastard wouldn't die.
He threw me down,
Hand around my throat.
Said, "Your soul is mine."
I reached inside my coat.
Smashed that holy water
Right across his eyes—
Hell started screaming...
And the Devil finally died.
I killed the devil!
I watched him die!
Holy water burned
Where the bullets flew right by!
From Cheyenne to Dodge,
He had stayed on my trail!
I stood my ground—
And sent him back to hell!
I quit running!
Drew my line in the dust!
The devil came to take my soul—
But he never took it from me!
Years went by,
My hands grew slow.
No red eyes watching,
No place left to go.
Then one cold morning
Before the dawn,
A pale old rider
Was waiting on my lawn.
No horns.
No fire.
No crooked grin.
I knew right then
Death had finally come in.
I reached for my Colt.
He shook his head.
"You beat the Devil.
But every man meets Death."
I asked him one thing:
"Is the Devil where we're going?"
Death smiled once.
"No.
He can't come where you're going."
I set my pistol down,
Walked outside willingly.
Death finally got me—
But the Devil never did.
I killed the devil!
But death got me!
The devil never took my soul—
And that's good enough for me!
I killed the devil!
He never got me!
I wasn't trying to live forever.
I just wasn't going to Hell.
