Cardinal

Who said that seeing one is a sign that someone you know has died?

That's just superstitious, right?

But, for a little cloudy blood-red light showing through the cardinals crest,

he is silhouetted nearly black.

See, through the kitchen window, from the bird feeder?

He shoots me a glance between nibbles on sunflower seeds,

left by hungry squirrels.

Does his eminence signal a death nearby?

Of a love, perhaps still born, that my self protecting heart would not allow to breathe

even as it was conceived.
