Over millennia and across all cultures, he has become such a figure in the great world theater: as a mischievous messenger of the gods Hermes or cultural hero Prometheus, as a fool of the Middle Ages, Till Eulenspiegel, Shakespeare's fools, Marx Brothers or Charlie Chaplin's tramp - the clown is an anthropological constant, it doesn't work without him.
