They packed the car and east they drove

The highway swelled with passengers

There on the beach my dad went for a swim

Across the states little towns were overrun with people

Observing the eclipse of the sun

In the path of totality

Swallowed by the shadows and silence

It was strangely comforting

Yes the earth went cold for a moment

And he was floating in the water

An inner-tube and eclipse glasses

With his eyes upon the sun

The alarm went off and I put my shoes on

Wandered outside to shiver in the dark

The moon we knew was all dusty and red

There I retreated far into my head

I thought upon the Babylonians

The ancient Greeks and the Egyptians

And how they stared at that same satellite

A blushing cloud to mask it's light

It was a list of hyperbole

Full moon super blue and bloody

Ominous and foreboding

And so early in the morning

We were standing in the driveway

Waiting for the transit to happen

The stars fade in the sunrise

Watching the moon as it passes

So we'll gaze at the same moon

As we have from the beginning

We'll each make up our minds

And assign a thoughtful meaning

Through the ritual of the view

How she wanes and she waxes
