mothers and fathers of daughters and sons

you cannot place judge on the things they have done

for you'd have done the same i know

to get to where you are

and if they don't do the same themselves

well they might not ever learn

we were raised by people

who were made by their mistakes

and they were raised by people

who were doing much the same

i'm the child of a lonely man

with a shadow in his eye

was there before the drink

and when he drank he lost his mind

but i'm the child of a woman

who knows love like the moon that rises

i count my lucky stars

that she shows it cos she knows it

our parents are our teachers

but it's the world that makes us wise

we get things wrong till we get it right

then we pass it on down the line

family is a classroom that spans across the great divide

you'll see things that you can't unsee

even when you shut your eyes

but you'll learn things that you'll take with you

throughout your whole life

like what to do or what not to do

when to fight and when to fly

mothers and fathers

and daughters and sons

life is not a war we wage

that one day will be won

it's not a mountain you can summit

nor an ocean you can cross

but if you're lucky

it's a moment

you can share with those you love
