For My Last Number

In a dusty old tent Seven miles out of town I set up my cards And the wind knocks em down And I try for the people Who want to believe In miracles and magic and life's mysteries Now I was born early I always feel late I never catch up to the promises I make And my mama she cried When I ran away And when her tears dried It was just another day And I made my living pulling rabbits out of hats Girls on white ponies and balancing acts Now I have grown tired No more tricks up my sleeve And for my last number I think I'll just leave I once had a girl and I loved her a lot She knew my mistakes and she sweetly forgot Well I tried hard to keep her I wanted her here But all good magicians Make things disappear And I made my living pulling rabbits out of hats Girls on white ponies and balancing acts Now I have grown tired No more tricks up my sleeve And for my last number I think I'll just leave And I put the smile on the face Of young girls and boys Wandered into this place The red velvet curtain Hides all of my fears And when the show is over They all reappear Please show me something I want to believe In this life of illusion it's myself I have deceived And a younger man's daydreams are quickly forgot The tents all go down on an old empty lot And I made my living pulling rabbits out of hats Girls on white ponies and balancing acts Now time's made me tired Took the tricks from my sleeve And for my last number I think I'll just leave
