How long has he shunned in the distance?

How long has he hidden from view?

How long have you longed to belong to his world?

How often does he think of you?

I know a few things about fathers

I've met one or two in my day

And one thing I've learned

Is they always seem bigger and better

From farther away

You stare at the screen in December

You glimpse him each year on TV

A thick camel coat

With a scarf at his throat

And a smile that you only can see

Announced by a jingle of sleigh bells

He'll sail into view through the mist

He's handsome, he's tall

He's the substance of all

Of your dreams and he doesn't exist

Cold wind in his hair

Gold skyline behind him

I wish it were true

I wish we could find him

You're locked in the sorcerers castle

You're high in The Plaza Hotel

You're waiting for him to fly in through the window

And find you and shatter the spell

It's the fairytale fable at bedtime

And just at the end, there's a twist

The petals turn black

The coachman turn back into rats

And he doesn't exist

This omen you've made

This future beside him

All just melts away

There's nothing inside him

He's longing to finally meet you

To make up the time that he's missed

To stand up at last, and put pain to the past

With his penitent heart in his fist

Not a moment too soon

That he doesn't exist
