A magnetar is a neutron star with an extremely strong magnetic field. The disintegration of the unstable crust is accompanied by massive emissions of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, mainly X-rays and gamma rays
When a supernova collapses into a neutron star, the strength of its magnetic field increases dramatically. Scientists have calculated that the neutron star's magnetic field can grow even more under certain circumstances. We call such a highly magnetic neutron star a magnetar
I'll pull you closer and tear you apart on an atomic level!
In the outer layers of the magnetar, which are composed of plasma of heavy elements, the pressure can increase so much that it leads to a "starquake." The energy of these seismic vibrations is extremely high and results in a burst of X-rays and gamma rays
It is estimated that about a tenth of supernova explosions result in a magnetar rather than the more usual neutron star or pulsar. This only happens if the star has a fast rotation and a strong magnetic field before it explodes as a supernova

I've already destroyed so much, but I can't destroy myself
I've already destroyed as much as a magnetar
