I woke up in a cheap motel in Texas
Suffering the after-effects of shame
Stumbled to the continental breakfast
A salesman there seemed to know my name
He never even asked where I was headed
But he offered me direction just the same
He said you can’t get there from here
A child’s laugh, a mother’s touch
A memory so dear
I see it all like yesterday so clear
But you can’t get there from here
Made my way back East as far as Memphis
In an outdoor farmer’s market I bought sweet tea
When a gypsy woman handed me some green leaves
Told me they could heal what’s wrong with me
Take this for your heart to make you stronger
She said, make a brand new start and carry on
But you can’t get there from here
You thought maybe in the taillights
The past might disappear
I hear the voices whisper in my ear
They say you can’t get there from here
I met a man crossing West End last night
With whisky breath he asked me for some change
Like two total strangers tried to warn me of the dangers
I told him, you can go home again
Yes, you can go home my friend
But you can’t get there from here
You thought maybe in the bright lights
The pain might disappear
I hear their voices still ringing in my ear
They say you can’t get there from here
No you can’t get there from here
A child’s laugh, a mother’s love
A memory so dear
I see it all like yesterday so clear
But you can’t get there from here
No you can’t get there from here
