Went outside all that I saw was a world of people sleeping on the sidewalk
Looking up hoping for someone to see they had nowhere to live and not enough to eat
My father stooped down to every single face
Tried to offer up some form of solace
A dollar or two or whatever he had
He said no one is safe when everybody lacks
Everyone matters that has to be clear
Everyone is sacred and held quite dear
How is it that some have so much nothing
When all we are is people who want so much something
Everything is equal and everything’s the same and everybody has to pull themselves up by their name and everybody has to pull themselves up by their bootstraps
But how can you do that if you don’t have any bootstraps?
I know someday that you will see
A day when you and I and we can all be free
Free us from the binds of inequality
Racism poverty and misogyny
Enough to eat, a place to sleep, let us live together in peace and harmony
Rising up from the weight of oppression together
Feeling ourselves going on forever
Love flows through you as it flows through me
We are one just like a symphony
Greed and power and the tenets they sway
They hold people hostage in a certain kind of way
They don’t even know they’re puppets on a string
Tied to a system that doesn’t give them anything
So why is the world filled with so much greed
When really we can all have everything we need?
Some folks just think they have and have more
But they end up having less and really they’re poor
They’ve got no friends, nobody to love
Empty words all their things and stuff
It’s really more important to take care of each other
So everyone can have as much as the other
Then we have a safe society
With all people being equal things are very simple
I know someday you will see
A day when you and I and we can all be free
I know someday you will see
A day when you and I and we can all be free
