Fireflies

There's something in the way the air hangs heavy and wraps you in a blanket every time you step outside.

They say mosquitoes like you if you're sweet

So I pretend that I'm not sweet

But still they eat me alive

But it's oh so green here in Tenneseee

On a nearly summer night in early June

And California I think of you all the time

But I don't know that I'll be back anytime soon

Because it feels like home now

When the fireflies come out

The nights are warmer than you think

But as the sun begins to sink, you hear the evening melody

And then a thousand little stars leap and dance through the backyard to a cicada symphony

But it's oh so green here in Tenneseee

And my birthday's getting close in late July

And California I think of you all the time

And you know that it was hard to say goodbye

But it feels like home now

When the fireflies come out

I think I'll stay awhile, at least long enough to catch some of this lightning in a bottle and see if I can make this last
