Middle of the Road

I learned early on that there's no easy way

to chase your dreams when you've got bills to pay

yeah, I could punch a clock, but I had songs to sing

young enough to think i could do everything

to try to live life down the middle

keeping one hand on the wheel

drift across the lines a little

between the work and what you feel

afraid and noncommittal

'cuz you never could decide

from the middle of the road

on a long and lonely ride

every mile or two, another exit sign

believing i could be two places at one time

empty promises that branded me a liar

still holding all those irons into the fire

to try to live life down the middle

nights you drove away from those faces in the door

nights you played for free where no one knew your name

nights that there were shows you didn't show up for

nights you blew off for your son's last football game

but now those faces in the door are grown and gone

and it don't matter now which side of the road you're on

you split yourself up between all the roles you played

and time ran out on all the plans you made
