Tekst Utworu

[Verse 1 – slow, smoky, minor key]
I went to meet the Devil down a dry red track
Boots full of dust, no plan to come back
Sky was black, and my heart beat slow
Had one last favour, one soul to show
He was sittin' by a fire in a chair made of bone
Grinnin’ like he’d waited, like I was well-known
He said, “Well, old man, what brings you down?”
I said, “My time is up, and I'm hell-bound.”
[Chorus – sparse, moody, steel guitar bleeding in background]
I said, “I’ve done wrong, and I don’t deny,”
“I cheated, I drank, I watched good love die.”
“But let me speak before I’m claimed,”
“Just give me a shot to clear my name.”
I ain’t askin’ for heaven, just higher ground
Where the dirt ain’t hot and my sins ain’t drowned
I went to meet the Devil with my hat in hand
And tried to talk like a better man
[Verse 2 – darker now, more tension]
He laughed so low, it shook my spine
Said, “You sure got guts for beggin’ time.”
“You never prayed when your hands were clean,”
“Now you wanna deal 'cause you’ve seen the machine?”
He stood up slow, all fire and coal
Said, “You ran your life like a piss-poor show.”
“Folk like you don’t get a stairway pass,”
“But damn if you don’t make me laugh.”
[Bridge – spoken/sung, broken voice over minimal chords]
I said, “I buried friends, I lied to wives,”
“I played God drunk and pissed away lives.”
“But every sinner’s got one good part,”
“And mine still beats like a broken heart.”
[Chorus – repeat, more soul, more ache]
I ain’t askin’ for heaven, just higher ground
Where the dirt ain’t hot and my sins ain’t crowned
I went to meet the Devil with dust in my mouth
To plead like a fool from the ruined south
[Outro – dying slow, last breath on guitar strings]
He looked me down with coal-black eyes
Said, “You might be scum, but at least you tried.”
“No promises, but here’s your grace —”
“Now get gone boy, before I change my face.”
[Final line – whispered or spoken]
And that’s how I left with smoke on my skin...
Not heaven...
But somewhere I could begin.
