So now, the shirts were finally real
Not just an idea, not just a logo
Not just a dream me and my homie had talked about
But now we had inventory, we had a brand
Now we needed customers
So we started looking for places to sell out of
Mall kiosks, retail spaces, shopping centers
Everywhere we looked, the answer was the same: too expensive
The rent was beyond our budget
We were entrepreneurs, but we were still building
Still learning, still trying to make every dollar count
That's when we found the swap meet
It wasn't glamorous, it wasn't Rodeo Drive
Wasn't fancy, but it was affordable
And more importantly, it gave us a chance
So we signed that lease
There was only one problem
We didn't have enough merchandise to
Make the booth look like a real store
A few shirts wasn't gon' cut it
So I did what hustlers do: I adapted
I started reaching out to my homies
Buying shirts from friends, supporting other small brands
Bringing in different products
Little by little, the booth started filling up
And then a blessing entered the picture
The woman I was dating at the time, she believed in the vision
Not just with words, but with action
She started making candy baskets, jewelry, gift items
Anything that could add value to our little booth
Anything that could help the business look complete
Looking back, she played a huge role during that period
Because when you're building something from nothing, support matters
And she gave plenty of it
Soon, the booth started looking less
Like a table and more like a real store
Simply the Best t-shirts, accessories, local brands, gift items
A little bit of everything
People started stopping by, friends started pulling up
Customers came through
We slowly spread
And for the first time, the brand had a physical home
Not a studio, not an album, but a storefront
Even if it was inside a swap meet
The only problem: it was—the swap meet was only open on the weekends
And for a real hustler, that was kinda hard
Five days of wanting to go hustle felt like forever
I wanted motion every day, opportunity every day
Business every day
Still, we made it work
Week after week, month after month
Building relationships, learning retail
Learning customers, learning branding
Learning what sold and what didn't
The swap meet became another classroom
Another lesson in entrepreneurialship
Then six months had passed
And just when things were getting comfortable
The landlord hit us with the news
The rent was doubling, just like that
The numbers didn't make sense
I wasn't angry, I wasn't discouraged
By then, I had learned a valuable lesson
Everything doesn't have to last forever to be successful
Sometimes a chapter serves its purpose
And the swap meet had done exactly that
It taught me how to sell, how to merchandise
How to build a brand outside of music
How to take an idea and put it directly in front of customers
So when the lease expired, we packed up
Not because we failed, because it was time for the next move
And one thing I knew for sure
Simply the Best was no longer just a clothing line
It was becoming a lifestyle
