Veteran songwriter, filmmaker and author Ted Egan lived in Alice Springs in the center of Australia, which is fitting because his contemporary folk struck at the very heart of the outback experience, paying special attention to First Nations issues. Witness “The Drover's Boy,” which recalled a time in the 1920s when a union between a First Nations woman and white man was forbidden, leading women to disguise themselves as shepherd boys. Egan also revelled in the characters of the outback, with “Drinkers of the Territory,” a raucous tribute to the pub dwellers in the top end of Australia.
